ABSTRACT: This study evaluates the effects of representation of the surface heterogeneities in the simulation of the local climate by Eta/Noah-MP model in a fragmented region of Amazon, without the need to increase the spatial resolution of the model. For this purpose, the parameterization used to incorporate the effects of the subgrade process was the tile approach. Three experiments with the Eta/Noah-MP model were set up as follows: two experiments with the spatial resolution of 5 km, one without the use of tile approach (PA), and the other experiment with the use of this approach (TI); and one experiment set up on the spatial resolution of 2 km, without the use of the tile approach (AR), which represents the high resolution. The focus is on the rainy and dry seasons, which correspond to the months of March and September 2003. In general, the results show that the use of the tile approach presents an improvement in the simulation of the spatial patterns of the turbulent fluxes and local circulations in the regions with extensive fragmentation of the domain. The experiment with the use of tiles increases the magnitude of the surface temperature, the sensible heat flux, the surface albedo, the upward longwave radiation, and the wind at 10 m. And, it reduces soil moisture and net radiation. In general, the experiment with tiles increases the latent heat flux in most of the domain, however, there is a reduction in the fragmented regions of the study area. There is no agreement as to the signs of the impacts of the experiment using the approach tile on simulated rainfall. This experiment also has impacts in the boundary layer. The effects of the representation of the surface heterogeneities are higher in the dry season than in the rainy season. The results suggest that the degree of impact of the subgrade process in the local climate relates to the scale of the fragmentation. We conclude that the use of tile approach adequately respond the issues of the impacts of changes in land use in fragmented areas of the Amazon. However, these impacts may have been partly masked by the treatments of water bodies from Noah-MP model and the scheme of cumulus convection from model Eta. |
